S5 Preseason Driver and Team Power Rankings

By ghost_726

Welcome everyone to our first power rankings of season 5! This season we’ll again be ranking drivers and constructors on a weekly basis, using the same methodology as last year. Members of the media team will vote on individual drivers each week, and the number of votes each driver gets, weighted by first place votes, second place votes, etc., will determine who is ranked in the top 5. Think of it like the NCAA Football Top 25 poll, but with a lot less sponsorship money and recruiting violations. For the constructor power rankings, media members will give each team a 1-10 rating each week based on their performance in that race. Those values will be averaged over the course of the season to determine the team’s performance rating. For the preseason, we had to modify this a little, and just had each media member rank each team. At this time we won’t be ranking super-constructors, but that may change as the season goes on.

Without further adieu, here are your pre-season power rankings!

Meet the Team Principals for F1CRL Season Five

By Bigryeguy98

F1 22 has been released and that means a new season of F1CRL is fast approaching. League moderator Jeff has decided to introduce a new system of roster management where team principals control two teams and four drivers to contend for the championship. Thus far, the addition of team principals to the league has garnered very positive reception from the drivers. Media team newcomer Bigryeguy98 has put together this interview series to introduce the team principals to the rest of F1CRL.

Can Bigryeguy98 lead his teams to the top again?

With two F1CRL driver’s championships and one constructor’s championship under his belt on F1 2021, it’s no secret that Bigryeguy98 is a fast racer. However, Bigryeguy98 taking the helm as Team Principal at Scuderia Ferrari and Alfa Romeo will present new challenges. Will he be able to lead both teams to success? Will he crack under the pressure? Here’s what he had to say:

  • What got you into F1 and why did you decide to be a team principal for the upcoming season?
    • I got into F1 2020 during COVID lockdown and got into IRL F1 shortly after. I decided to be a Team Principal because I enjoy the strategy component of F1 and believe I can help both teams and all four drivers be successful in the new season.
  • Now that F1 22 is released, do you have any thoughts on the new game?
    • I won’t be able to play the new game until July 8th, but from what I’ve seen I think I’ll enjoy the new game. The differences in setup and the changes to the handling sound like they suit my driving style.
  • Which driver in your team are you most excited about having and why?
    • I believe I’ve put together a great team of drivers who can compete for the championships right off the bat. Beyond once again being teammates at Ferrari with my mate Alex, I am most excited about having KB at Alfa Romeo for the upcoming season. We are both fast and have been championship rivals in the past, but we have always had mutual respect for each other. Now that he’s at Alfa Romeo I’m excited to see what he can do alongside the Season 1 F2CRL champion Say.
  • What are your goals, personally and for your team, for the upcoming season?
    • I believe our teams can compete for both championships right off the bat and I hope both our teams will be competitive for wins and podiums each race. Personally, I hope to continue to find pace after turning off traction control on F1 2021, and being better about tire and ERS management over the new 50% race distance.
  • Which team/driver are you considering your rival for the upcoming season?
    • Haas and McLaren as usual seem quick under the leadership of Ghost so both of those teams will likely challenge Ferrari and Alfa Romeo for the constructors. I would consider PCC-Godly and KB my main rivals for the driver’s championship.

Will Ghost_726 take the step up to the championship?

Ghost_726 has been a very fast and consistent racer in F1CRL. However, his consistency hasn’t necessarily translated to championship success. With only one win under his belt, Ghost_726 will need to take a step up if he’s to compete for the championship. With Ghost_726 announced as Team Principal for Haas and McLaren for Season Five, we asked him some questions in preparation for the new season:

  •   How did you get into sim racing/F1 and why did you decide to be a team principal for the upcoming season?
    • I started sim racing around the time season 1 of the CRL was ending. I decided to take on the role of team principal because I really enjoy the team and community building aspects of sim leagues.
  • Now that F1 22 is released, do you have any thoughts on the new game?
    • I’m really enjoying it so far. Like real life, the cars seem to behave a lot differently, so there’s going to be an adjustment period and potentially shake up in the pecking order. I do wonder if the rear traction is supposed to be this poor, but we’ll figure it out.
  • Which driver in your team are you most excited about having and why?
    • Honestly, that’s a tough call since I already have a relationship with all of the guys on the team Kenny and I go back to a sim hockey league, and we raced together in S2. Incident and I have obviously been teammates and champions for two seasons now. And Godly and I were teammates in another F1 league before I dragged him over to CRL. But if I had to pick one driver that I’m excited about on track, it’s probably Godly. Everyone already knows what Incident can do, and Kenny had a real renaissance year last season. I think this season could be Godly’s chance to really break out and make a push for some individual accolades.
  • What are your goals, personally and for your team, for the upcoming season?
    • As a driver, my goal is the same as it’s always been, to compete for maximum points. The league continues to get more competitive, so I don’t really expect to be suddenly challenging for wins. I’m hoping to be scoring most weeks, and competing for the odd podium. From a constructor and super-constructor stand point, I expect to be competing for championships. Both of my team’s have stud #1 drivers and selfless, team-first #2s that can score consistently. While we don’t have the raw pace of some other team’s, I think we can make up for it in consistency.
  • Which team/driver are you considering your rival for the upcoming season?
    • It’s hard to say this early in the season. On paper, Ferrari / Alfa Romeo have the most pace, so they’ll likely be our biggest competition in the constructor and super-constructor championships. But I’m not sleeping on the other teams, especially since I haven’t seen any of them race the new cars.

Will Mercedes and Williams be competitive under Jmtitan10?

Jmtitan10 has taken over as Team Principal at two teams which he has raced for previously: Mercedes and Williams. He has driven in every F1CRL race so far, but he is still seeking his first podium and win in competitive league play. Will the season be the one where he gets his first podium or win? Or will he and his teams be drowned out of the midfield by the other constructors? Here’s what he had to say in preparation for the new season:

  • How did you get into sim racing/F1 and why did you decide to be a team principal for the upcoming season?
    • I had some friends who got really into F1 and sim racing and recommended I get into both. So I watched Drive to Survive and thought the sport seemed really interesting so I started watching races and got the game. That rolled into me getting a wheel and getting pretty hooked.
  • Now that F1 22 is released, do you have any thoughts on the new game?
    • I like it. Driving feels good, game looks good, I’m excited for racing.
  • Which driver in your team are you most excited about having and why?
    • HAL is a longtime teammate and I look forward to seeing what we can do with the new cars and compare to the stronger field.
  • What are your goals, personally and for your team, for the upcoming season?
    • I’m aiming to use no assists in any races this season, and my goal is to become a consistent point finisher by the end of the season.
  • Which team/driver are you considering your rival for the upcoming season?
    • I anticipate us competing with AlphaTauri and Red Bull this season, but with HAL’s strong driving I think we could likely best them. Personally I’m looking at Juzzy and Bode as my main on-track rivals this season.

Can Juzzzyb lead his teams up the field?

Juzzyb has been a long-time racer in F1 CRL. However, the rising quality of the field has meant that his points per race numbers have subsequently gone down each season. With Juzzzyb announced as Team Principal for Red Bull and AlphaTauri, many are interested to see if Juzzzyb can lead his teams up the field in the new season. Here’s what he had to say:

  • How did you get into sim racing/F1 and why did you decide to be a team principal for the upcoming season?
    • I’d always played racing games as a kid and had slowly been sinking more and more time into them. After playing far too much f1 2020 I decided to put myself a sim rig together. I was approached by Jeff about being a team principal and given an offer I couldn’t refuse.
  • Now that F1 22 is released, do you have any thoughts on the new game?
    • I haven’t had a chance to play it yet, I’ve been on a scuba trip 40 miles off the north east coast of Australia for the past few days.
  • Which driver in your team are you most excited about having and why?
    • I’m excited about racing with moose again, we have a great chemistry and have worked well together on teams previously.
  • What are your goals, personally and for your team, for the upcoming season?
    • My personal goals for this season are to score points after a pointless run last year. For the team, I’d like to try to bring us off the bottom of the constructors standings.
  • Which team/driver are you considering your rival for the upcoming season?
    • This one may come across a bit odd, but my constant rival in racing is one of my own drivers, bode. In F1 and Gran Turismo we have had some great fights and I’m looking forward to doing it all over again this season.

Will WilliamLebowski make his mark on F1CRL from the pit wall?

WilliamLewboski has been announced as the Team Principal for Alpine and Aston Martin for F1CRL Season Five. Whilst waiting for crossplay to be released, Lebowski will need to make his mark on F1CRL from the pit wall this season. With the addition of Fkuanton, perhaps this is the season WilliamLebowski can take his teams to the top. We asked him some questions in preparation for the new season:

  • How did you get into sim racing/F1 and why did you decide to be a team principal for the upcoming season?
    • I got into sim racing in 2019 while I was spending a lot of time streaming on twitch. I also had just stopped racing my bike at this point due to an accident and lack of funds to keep racing in the upcoming seasons. I had played racing games in the past and started to see people doing these amazing series and events just like the real world events. This got me really excited because I know I’ll never spend any time in a real race car on a track and I knew I still wanted the competition of racing. So I started playing games like F1 with controller support, then upgraded to a wheel. From the first second of my first drive with my first wheel I knew I had found my thing and a replacement for cycling. I became a principal because I’ve wanted to be involved in F1CRL since Jeff started it. Additionally from my team based endurance racing experience I’ve gained since Jeff started the league, I knew I could help provide a healthy environment like my team manager/owner does for TGM SimSport.
  • Now that F1 22 is released, do you have any thoughts on the new game?
    • I haven’t played the game yet.
  • Which driver in your team are you most excited about having and why?
    • I am incredibly excited about everyone that has decided to come race on Aston Martin and Alpine. Everyone who joined took a chance on being on my team and I appreciate that a lot in a teammate. But I am incredibly excited to race with Anton because we have been friends for years bonding over motorsport but have never raced or done a lap together.
  • What are your goals, personally and for your team, for the upcoming season?
    • My goal for myself is to get up to speed right away (after cross play is introduced). My goal for my team is to create an environment where people can improve, have fun, feel like they are a part of something, and feel like they can compete with the field.
  • Which team/driver are you considering your rival for the upcoming season?
    • Say is considered my rival for this season. But it’s because he acted like he was too good to join Aston Martin when he was asked.

How Dominant Was Bigryeguy98 in Season 4?

At some point near the end of Bigryeguy98’s dominant Season 4 Championship victory, I found myself wondering how his season compared to some of the all-time F1CRL seasons. The season certainly would have been different if fivesix2KING had competed for the entire season, but he didn’t. The reality we have is that Bigryeguy98 secured the Championship with 145 points (with a 32 point margin over his closest competitor).

Math
The first step for me was to compare Bigryeguy98’s performance in Season 4 to some of the seasons we’ve seen historically, from a Points per Race perspective. Note that I only included seasons where the driver raced five or more races.

Driver Season Points/Race
xJRACx Season 1 21.9
Bigryeguy98 Season 4 20.7
Bigryeguy98 Season 1 17.8
HAL9100 Season 3 14.1
Reyrey61924 Season 1 13.4
PCC-Godly Season 4 13.3
xINCIDENTx Season 2 13.1
ghost_726 Season 3 12.7
xINCIDENTx Season 4 12.6
Top F1CRL Seasons by Points/Race. 5 Races Required in the Season to Qualify

From a Point/Race perspective, Bigryeguy98’s Season 4 comes in second behind xJRACx’s dominant Season 1 performance, where he averaged 21.9 points per race and ran away with the Driver Championship. It is worth noting that xJRACx and Bigryeguy98 are in a class of their own when it comes to most successful seasons by Point/Race.

What Does the Math Mean?
As with all data, there is some nuance to be had. In Season 1, F1CRL races averaged 11.8 competitors per race. In Season 4, F1CRL races averaged 16.2 competitors per race. Assuming all competitors had equal skill, Bigryeguy98 faced more competition in his Season 4 performance than xJRACx did in his Season 1 performance. It’s also not realistic to assume that all competitors are equal. While it would technically be possible to analyze the average TrueSkill that each competitor faced during his high-scoring campaign, it would require more time and TrueSkill tweaking than this CEO/God-King/reporter (“Writer”) is willing to commit. That being said, I would surmise that most F1CRL competitors would agree that the field has progressively gotten more competitive and more skilled as the league has matured. As an additonal data point, at the time of writing this post (following the conclusion of Season 4, in advance of the beginning of Season 5), Bigryeguy98 does have a higher TrueSkill than xJRACX.

Driver TrueSkill
Bigeryeguy98 30.588
xJRACx 29.105

So Which Season Was Better?
The honest answer is I don’t know. Bigryeguy98’s Season 4 performance felt more dominant to this Writer, but perhaps that’s recency bias. As a Season 1 racer, xJRACx’s performance in that season sure felt pretty dominant. But for now, I’m thinking that the season Bigryeguy98 put together in Season 4 is a performance that has not yet been seen, and perhaps may not be seen again, depending on how the driver roster continues to evolve as F1CRL moves into Season 5 with the release of F1 22. Fans of the league can only hope that both xJRACx and Bigryeguy98 are both active competitors in Season 5 and put up another titanic battle to resolve the question of who stands as F1CRL’s reigning dominant driver.

S4:R8 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Recap

By ghost_726

Season 4 took the CRL grid to Abu Dhabi for the penultimate race of the season. With Bigryeguy98 on a 3 race winning streak, and his closest competitor out of action, Bigryeguy98 was looking to wrap up the championship, and move Williams even closer to the constructors’ championship. Did he pull it off?

Qualifying Recap

  • Bigryeguy98’s potential coronation got off to a promising start as the title hopeful took pole position by more than two tenths of a second
  • Isiboy23 enjoyed his best qualification of the season by sticking his car into P2
  • KENNYHITMANHART and jurdiS09 filled out the second row of the grid after KENNYHITMANHART missed out on P2 by .004 seconds
  • Haas teammates ghost_726 and xINCIDENTx lined up beside each other on the third row of the grid, bolstering their chances to protect their championship lead
  • Another pair of teammates, the Mercedes duo of HAL9100 and jmtitan10, lined up on the fourth row of the grid after qualifying P7 and P8.
  • Guitarhero1234 took P9 while KB-0_07 marked his return to the CRL with a P10 qualification on the medium tire

Race Recap

  • To no one’s surprise, Bigryeguy98 was able to convert his fourth pole position into a fourth victory, earning him the championship with one race to go
  • But KENNYHITMANHART put together a sterling drive to finish P2, his first podium of the season, and ensure that McLaren stayed narrowly ahead of Williams
  • xINCIDENTx captured his fourth podium in a row with a P3 finish, while teammate ghost_726 grabbed P5 for his second top 5 finish in a row
  • KB-0_07 made use of the alternate tire strategy to carve through the field and finish a respectable P4 in his first race back in the league
  • Mercedes enjoyed a strong race, bringing home 14 points after HAL9100 and jmtitan10 finished P6 and P8 respectively
  • Aleixcucco27 continued his fine run of form to close the season, finishing P7 and contributing 6 very valuable points to Williams’ title challenge
  • Isiboy23 was unfortunate to spin late in the race while running near the front. But he was able to recover after a pit for soft tires to finish P9 and grab the fastest lap point
  • ChrisKYU62 grabbed P10 for AlphaTauri after a steady drive saw him improve from P13 on the grid

Standings Update

  • The biggest news of the week is that we have our first two time champion. Bigryeguy98’s 25 points in Abu Dhabi takes his lead to 34 points with one race to go, meaning the trophy is his.
  • xINCIDENTx’s P3 performance sees him move up to P3 in the championship, a mere 5 points behind PCC-Godly for P2.
  • Ghost_726 moved 4 points ahead of isiboy23, meaning their battle for P6 comes down to Australia
  • KENNYHITMANHART’s first podium of the podium moves him over HAL9100 into P8 in the championship
  • KB-0_07’s P4 finish sees him score his first points of the season, and into P14

Team Standings Update

  • No team’s changed positions after Abu Dhabi, but several championship battles will be decided in Abu Dhabi
  • The battle for P1 goes into the last race with Haas leading McLaren by 14 points, and Williams by 16 points. At this point any one of those teams could hoist the trophy at year end.
  • AlphaTauri (P5 – 75 points), Aston Martin (P6 – 66 points) and Mercedes (P7 – 61 points) are all in the hunt for the last spot in the top half of the table. Can AlphaTauri hold off the chasing duo, or can Aston Martin or Mercedes grab a podium to jump into P5.

Race at a Glance

Podium – Bigryeguy98, KENNYHITMANHART, xINCIDENTx

Team Win – Williams (33 points)

Pole Position – Bigryeguy98 (1:35.612)

Fastest Lap – isiboy23 (1:37.858)

Most Positions Gained – KB-0_07 (P10 > P4)

Driver of the Day – KB-0_07 (7/13 votes) – It was amazing to return and get so close to a podium, because during practice I was quick but I spun almost every lap. So when I got to the race and just prayed I didn’t spin again, and when I went on to the softs I saw that I was doing well and was happy with the result that I ended with.

Race Result

The lights went out of a early morning Silverstone and it was Mercedes’s Say taking the top spot after a long and exhausting race for the drivers, Mercedes will be celebrating the win going

into Singapore with Panda in P2 keeping his title hopes alive and it was Haas’s Mike who will also be celebrating after a long wait since the podium in the opening race in Monaco, a truly well deserved podium for Haas, Williams’s Spider will be very happy with another P4 finish

after fighting from 9th of the grid start. Meanwhile in 5th and 6th was Spots who suffered a spin in the race and Reckless having trouble, the two front grid qualifiers having a fairly forgettable race here in Silverstone. Then it was Haas’s Reaper finishing P7 after taking on late damage on the final lap and then McLaren’s Kall finishing P8 having a race to forget as he spun out just like a lot of drivers here. Then finally rounding out the Top 10 was the two Red Bulls of Loloman in P9 and Tweeddad in P10 scoring points for the Milton Keynes team.

Sadly not all drivers finish in the points and in Silverstone it was GetPerk for AlphaTauri and Mercedes’s Raven who didn’t get points here in the home of Formula 1.

Alain Prost Trophy (awarded to the driver with the most positions gained from the grid)

With 5 races in the archive, the top of this special ranking remains unchanged, with KunpFuPanda leading by only 4 overtakes, Untidy991Spider takes the second position with 15 overtaking in just two races, the wooden medal for this weekend unfortunately awaits KallMeMaybe who reaches 14 overtakes in 4 races.

Ayrton Senna Trophy (awarded to the driver with the most poles & fastest laps)

Still very privileged ranking with only 3 names on the list. Sayayinies4ever with 6 points (3 poles and 3 fastest laps), SSpoTs with 3 points (2 pole positions and 1 fastest lap) and RecklezzXV with only 1 point (1 fastest lap).

Will the Singapore race be able to give us some surprises for this ranking?

Singapore GP Preview

By Aleix27

The circuit is very tough on brakes, with drivers spending 22 seconds, or a quarter of the lap time with their foot planted on the left hand pedal. There are 15 braking points and pad and disc wear is something the engineers have to keep an eye on, lap after lap.

The Marina Bay Circuit is not a track where engine power rules the roost. Only 44% of the lap is spent on full throttle, although heat soak on the engine is considerable, partly down to the high temperatures and level of humidity. Fuel consumption is also a factor, with an estimated 99 kilos of fuel used over the course of the race. It means that “lift and coast” will be the order of the day in order not to run dry.

Turn 1 [Sheares Corner] – Coming at the end of the start-finish straight that was made solely for the track, Turn 1 is a tight left-hander in which drivers often come together as they try to squeeze through.

Turn 2 – Next up is the sweeping Turn 2, which is more a curve than a corner. Here, the priority is staying out of trouble and positioning yourself well for the final part of the opening S-shaped section.

Turn 3 – Quickly slam on the brakes or pay as immediately afterwards is Turn 3, a sharp hairpin taking us onto the streets of Singapore.

Turn 4 – Another turn that isn’t really a turn but rather a slight curve on a short straight that can be taken flat-out.

Turn 5 – The same can’t be said for Turn 5 which is a 90-degree right-hander leading to the longest straight on the track and the first DRS zone. It’s an open exit, allowing an early chance to get on the throttle – but fail to do so and your position is under threat.

Turn 6 – Another minor curve on the straight that you can, and should, keep your foot firmly on the pedal for as we enter Sector 2. With DRS and slipstreaming, this is where overtakes will be lined up.

Turn 7 [Memorial Corner] – If you’re going to get past a driver, here is the place to do it. Either dive to the left and down the inside and force your opponent wide or sweep around the outside to have the better line for the following corner.

Turn 8 [Stamford] – After a short straight comes a tight right-hand hairpin.

Turn 9 – There’s not much time to get back up to speed as it’s immediately followed by a medium-speed left. Don’t go too wide or you’ll meet the wall.

Turn 10 [The Singapore Sling] – Formerly a brutal and bumpy three-apex chicane, this was made into a more straightforward left-hander in 2013 after complaints from the drivers, but it’s a corner that you still ‘sling’ yourself into.

Turn 11 – Quickly switch back across to the left-hand side of the track and clip the kerb for this 90-degree right.

Turn 12 – Go back to the left for another gentle curve over the Anderson Bridge before hitting the brakes while swinging to the right – a tricky, technical part of the track.

Turn 13 – The track’s tightest corner, a left hairpin that was widened to create some overtaking opportunities for the very brave.

Turn 14 – Next up is a short straight, where DRS is available to use, with a sharp right turn at the end of it, found at the same intersection as Turn 8 as the corners back onto each other.

Turn 15 – A gentle sweeping left-hander that, coming just before the next corner, shouldn’t be taken flat out.

Turn 16/17 [Esplanade] – Approaching the floating platform grandstand, things are slowed down with a right-to-left chicane.

Turn 18/19 – At another place with a wall that has claimed many victims comes a left-to-right chicane, narrowing as drivers go underneath the fan grandstand. There’s no getting away with mistakes here.

Turn 20/21 – The third and final chicane, going right before an open left. Watch for the wall on the exit, don’t take liberties here.

Turn 22 /23  – After a minor lift before the first apex, the final two open left turns are then taken at full throttle at speeds of well over 100mph, taking drivers back onto the main straight and to the finish line.
